Why Cushion Density Matters More Than Thickness

3 min read

Thickness feels good in the showroom, but density is what keeps a floor flat, safe, and lasting under real traffic.

It is tempting to judge a cushion by how plush it feels. But the number that predicts how a floor will hold up is density — measured in pounds per cubic foot — not thickness.

What density does

Rolling traffic — carts, wheelchairs, walkers, luggage — concentrates load on the same paths all day. A low-density cushion compresses, bottoms out, and lets the carpet above it ripple and buckle. That creates trip hazards and wears the carpet out early.

  • Holds its support — High-density cushion resists compression set, so it does not bottom out
  • Prevents ripples — A firm base keeps carpet from shifting and wrinkling
  • Extends carpet life — Proper density absorbs impact and protects the carpet backing

Match density to traffic

  • Guest rooms and private spaces — Comfort-focused stretch-in cushion
  • Corridors and public space — Higher-density double-stick cushion
  • Continuous rolling-wheel areas — The densest commercial cushion you can spec

Compression set tells you how much support a cushion permanently loses under load — lower is better. Pair it with density to predict real-world durability.
